Barista UIs – What Are They?

There is a lot of difference between the Barista and bartender UIs. Basically, they are two different systems with a lot of similarities but differences as well. But there is one thing that all three have in common. They serve customers as best as they can.

The most common thing that all three of these systems do is take orders and make them quickly. This can be done through answering phones or through calling customers on the intercom. Usually, the bartender will either have an earpiece or mouthpiece attached to their ear that allows them to hear the calls from the customers. From there, they will transfer the order from the bartender to another employee who will then proceed to deliver the beverage to the customer. The only way for a bartender to break this cycle is by leaving the customer service line to go perform other errands.

Other than serving customers, these systems have other important functions. First, they can help a bartender to remember more information about a drink. For example, if the bartender is making a Manhattan and needs some advice on how to create the perfect Manhattan, they can incorporate the Barista UIs with a LCD screen that shows them information such as the ingredients of the Manhattan and different bar recipes. Not only does this give the bartender more knowledge, it also allows him or her to do a more thorough job of preparing the Manhattan.

On the flip side, there are some Barista UIs that do not allow for much input from the customer. If the customer wants to mix his or her own drink, then that is his or her decision to make. However, if the customer requests that the bartender add cream to the drink or something else, then he or she must ask in a very specific manner. Without much input from the customer, the bartender is left doing only what the customer dictates.

It is interesting to note that some Barista systems don’t even feature interaction at all. Instead, there is just a big screen above the bartender’s head that counts down and tells the person standing in line behind the bar when their turn is next. This seems like such a pointless addition, but it can be used to the advantage of the bartender. If he or she gets a few more customers through the system, then he or she might be able to go on without an assistant. In fact, in many cases, a bartender will never need an assistant.

Another drawback of this type of system is that there is no way to determine if the information displayed is correct. The system might list the ingredients and amounts of each ingredient, but the measurements are probably wrong. For example, a recipe for a triple double batch of frozen pizzas should state the exact amount of ingredients needed to make each slice. With this in mind, customers might end up getting a different number of servings than listed on the menu. However, most people would probably not notice that one or two items were off the recipe.
