The ’80s Setting:

Yakuza 0 takes place at the height of Japan’s economic bubble, with glitz, glamour and opulence all over the city. The title focuses on how the different yakuza factions are competing for control of a vacant lot in Kamurocho that could tip the balance of power in the underworld and set off a series of events.

The game’s setting gives the players a fresh perspective on series characters, like Kiryu and Majima before they were driven to insanity. It also gives players insight into characters who only had brief appearances in the first Yakuza game, such as Sohei Dojima, Kiryu’s father figure whose death in the first game set the entire series’ events into motion.

In addition to being a period piece, Yakuza 0 also features a number of unique gameplay mechanics that distinguish it from other titles in the series. Some are minor, while others are significant.

Money Is Everything: The city of Kamurocho and the Sotenbori district are packed with opulent, shallow, and wealthy people who are ready to pay for just about anything. Throughout the game, players can purchase items, hire advisors to invest in their properties, managers and security staff to ensure business runs smoothly, and even a restaurant to cater to customers’ needs.

A Bartender Is Your Best Friend: The game’s main protagonists are bartenders, which is how they make their living. They can also hire new hostesses and train them to be more successful at their jobs, as well as pair them with customers for drinks or dinner to increase profits.
